There are instances where the wiring of your house may need to be completely redone. Old wiring can be a health and safety hazard that can be the cause of a higher electricity bill. Faulty wiring is one of the causes of the major fires in homes all over the United States. The fires have cost over a billion dollars in damages over the last four years alone.

You need to look out for signs if and when your house is in need of a total rewire. Faulty wiring can cause massive damage if left unattended. Here are a few things to look out for when dealing with faulty wiring and when it needs to be replaced.

Electrical shocks from sockets and switches

There may be switches in your home that can give you a shock, at the slightest touch. If you plug into the socket, your laptop or other electronic equipment might give out a shock. This is a major sign that the wiring is faulty and needs to be replaced. Your equipment can be damaged and in the worst-case scenario, you could get seriously injured.

Outlets heating up during use

If your switches feel hot while it is in use, it may be because of the old wiring. There are times that the switch itself is the problem, but you will need an electrician to make that call. Heated switches can cause the socket to melt and the plugs can get damaged completely.

Fuses blow often

Your fuse box is often positioned in a location distant from the main living space, such as the garage, laundry room, or basement. They contain the main switch that controls the entire power, RCD (Residual Current Devices) switches and the circuit breaker. If the fuse seems to blow out often, have them checked out immediately by a certified local electrician nearby home. This might be a sign of the wear and tear of the wire.
